St. Patrick’s Day has the potential to be a really fun holiday, especially with kids. There are endless possibilities for how to make St. Patrick’s day a fun and exciting day. We’ve tried to make the most out of St. Patrick’s day this year by doing some of the following activities.
5 Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day
1. Decorate for St. Patrick’s Day
Everything is more highly anticipated when there are decorations on display announcing an upcoming holiday. We found so many treasures at the Dollar Store and spent about $10 on a bunch of fun decor including a few shimmery shamrocks, gold coins, black pots (that I spray painted gold), a leprechaun hat, and foam, glitter shamrocks. I mounted one of these shamrocks in a gold frame from the Dollar Store and it turned out really cute.
We also got this adorable four leaf clover banner from Loaly Inc. She has so many amazing options, you can check out other styles here. And as per usual, I decorated our Chalkola chalkboard for the season. The $5 rainbow stacking toy we got for our kids, has quickly become a favorite! We also spent some time doing St. Patrick’s Day related arts and crafts and used those in our decorations. Each of the kids painted their own version of a rainbow and we added glitter and cotton balls to the end.
2. Make a leprechaun trap
This may go down in our family history, as the single most exciting project to work on together. I naively thought we would spend 20-30 minutes making some simple leprechaun traps, but once the girls’ imaginations got started there was very no holding back. We ended up spending hours making these elaborate leprechaun traps with better interior design than my own home, because the girls wanted to make it so cozy and fun the leprechauns would never want to leave.
We used materials we had laying around for this project other than the gold coins and pots that we got from the Dollar Store. Otherwise, we used construction paper, some of the girls’ coloring sheets, toothpicks, glitter, and cotton balls to create some of the most beautiful leprechaun traps I’ve ever seen.
3. Give your kids a few simple and fun gifts
Kids love surprises and gifts, even if they’re simple and inexpensive. This year, I found a $5 stacking rainbow toy from Walmart that my kids love! Of course, seasonal books are fun and below you’ll find our favorite St. Patrick’s Day kids’ books. I also gave my girls tights from Shop Olivia J they needed some new tights, and making them part of a gift is way more exciting than just adding them to their sock drawer.
We also got this cute, shamrock tic-tac-toe game from CRDC Creations on Etsy. The game fits in the bag and is easy for little ones to play. They think it’s pretty cool!
Another great gift, for girls, are bracelets with green. They’ll love wearing them and they won’t get pinched. It’s simple, inexpensive, and fun! I love this Lucky Charm bracelet by Little Lunds Co. Honestly, I love all her bracelets, there are so many darling options.
4. Plan fun outfits for your kids so they’ll be wearing green
Since St. Patrick’s Day requires specific wardrobe requirements, it can be really fun to pick out an outfit for your little one. We got these adorable unicorn, St. Patrick’s themed outfits from The Photo Punks on Etsy; and their rainbow hair clips are from Winnie James Co., also found on Etsy. I tried to find a few more cute outfits ideas that I linked to below.
5. Print out coloring sheets and do some fun crafts together
I also came across this incredible 14-page St. Patrick’s themed pre-school packet that’s completely FREE. Here are several fun coloring pages to choose from, as well. I linked an amazing blog post with lots of different St. Patrick’s day arts and crafts ideas to do with kids.
Bonus tip: This one is super simple, super easy, and also a guilty pleasure; eat Lucky Charms for breakfast on St. Patrick’s Day.
What are some of your favorite St. Patrick’s Days traditions? Or what are you planning to do to celebrate this year? I hope you and your kids will enjoy some of these fun ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s day together.
