As an avid reader, I’ve read so many good books in the last couple of months. I wanted to write down some of my thoughts. I would recommend most of the ones that I’ve read. Some of these titles are definitely better than others, a few I’m not completely sure my about, but just listing out ones I’ve finished. Take a look and tell me if you’ve read any of these books too!
10 Books I’ve Read Recently
Favorite Books
The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. AMAZING!!! I feel like this is one everyone should read. A good life perspective. Kurt and I read this one together and both really, really enjoyed it! This would make such a good book club pick. We had a lot of good discussions about it. *Content warning: heavy language in a few parts.
The Book of Longings by Sue Monk Kidd. One of my recent favorites! Although, I did want to stop after the first little bit. It was just so different than I expected. However, in the Afterward the author talks about how she wanted this book to specifically be about Jesus “the man” not Jesus “the Son of God”. Interestingly, I felt a closer relationship to Jesus after reading this, and thinking more about what his life would have been like as a man.
The Book of Lost Names by Kristin Harmel. I loved this book, and learned so much about the French resistance during WWII, and what they were doing to help save lives. I was very emotionally drawn into this book, there is one part that shook me too much, but otherwise a very sweet love story amongst incredible fighters. It is based on a true story.
The Book of Lost Friends by Lisa Wingate. Lisa Wingate is an amazing author and I’ve read several of her books. This one was so good! A whole aspect of US American history that I didn’t know anything about. A very sad reality of the post-slave era, but not a depressing book. It was really well done and hard to put down.
American Duchess by Karen Harper. I didn’t know this history at all. I wish that this story could have been a trilogy. It felt so rushed and storylines wrapped up so quickly. I did still love this book! I am hopeful someone will take this storyline and flesh it out into more of a novel to really feel more character development.
Self-Help & Parenting Books
Wild Things: The Art of Nurturing Boys by Stephen James and David Thomas. My neighbor suggested this one and let us borrow her copy. We’ve really enjoyed reading it together. It’s helped us have really good parenting conversations, not just about our boys. It offers valuable insights into differences between boys and girls.
Think Like a Monk by Jay Shetty. Kurt was listening to this one as an audiobook, during one of our trips, so I started listening to it with him. I really like it! Definitely a self-help type, but very unique subjects for self-improvement, specifically how to create peace and purpose.
Good Audiobooks
One Little Lie by Colleen Coble. This is a trilogy I listened to. I was sucked into the storyline, it was very well written and interesting. If you’re looking for something for a good audiobook, this was really good!
Fast Pitch by Nic Stone. Another one that I listened to, and a good, middle-grade novel. I liked the messages and the overall story. Short and quick to get through; also a good reminder of how hard it is to be a middle schooler.
Not Sure I Would Recommend
The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi. I can honestly say, I’m not sure how I feel about this book. So interesting. I learned a lot about Indian culture, my heart aches for a lot of suffering people around the world experience. I haven’t read the other books in this trilogy. Maybe my thoughts would be more concrete if I completed the series. m not sure I recommend it I’m also not sure that I don’t. Very well-written, a lot of perspective gained. I don’t know, I kind of want someone else to read it to talk about it with me, so I can decide. Any volunteers?
