I saw this cute idea on Instagram to give the kids a tray with play doh, candles, sprinkles, and cupcake liners and let their creative minds take over. My little ones went overboard with their pretend play, but I loved it! Together we created such an engaging learning activity.
They decided they wanted to set up a bake sale with all the cupcakes they were making, so we got to work. We used our Banker’s Box Treats ‘N Eats Playhouse for the bake sale, and set if up over the kids’ kitchen set. Coloring this playhouse has made for hours of engaging fun alone! We have loved having this project to work on together!
I linked all the products we used for this activity above, but these silicone cupcake liners were perfect. They’re easy to clean out and held their shape better than trying to use the paper liners with play doh. I recommend using larger sprinkles and encouraging them to lightly drop the sprinkles on top, if you don’t want sprinkles mixed into the play doh. Also, this white snack tray from Amazon, is one of my favorite purchases ever! We use it for snacks, picnics, food at the pool, parties, imaginative play, etc. It’s incredible!
Make Learning Fun with Pretend Play
My favorite part about this whole activity, was how much my kids were learning in a fun and playful way. Here are some different ways my kids were learning. Dolly made this bake sale sign, so she got to practice writing and spelling. We printed and then cut out pretend money (to print out your own pretend money check out this link). Not only did they get to practice cutting, but they learned a lot about our monetary system and the value of different coins.
Considering, everything they learned and how much fun they had, it was a hit. This consumed hours of their day and was such an engaging learning activity. The best part was watching how excited and happy they were to be playing and learning together. Definitely a morning spent well together! If you and your little set up your own bake sale, I would love to see pictures!
