The last few weeks I’ve been sharing some resources for the schoolwork we’ll be doing at home, and some favorite books, as well. This is my first year sending a little one to school. She absolutely loves it, but it’s been a hard adjustment. More than anything it’s hard to have her developing so many social relationships without me nearby. I feel like it’s such an important skill for her to be developing, but it’s also hard to be losing that control, as a parent. I’ve found that books are some of the best ways to teach children meaningful values. They can understand so much more when there are characters, pictures, and a story line.
We’ve been reading some of these books about choices and consequences, as a way to open up conversations about good and bad behavior. It’s also been really helpful for reminding us all, including me as a mom, that bad days happen sometimes, and that’s okay too. I hope you and your kids will enjoy this list I’ve put together.
11 Children’s Books About Choices & Consequences
Series of Children’s Books with Value-based Lessons
I wanted to highlight a few of these books that are actually part of some of our favorite series. These series focus on teaching value-based lessons, while still engaging little ones with their interesting characters and plots.
What Should Danny Do? by Ganit and Adir Levy, is one of a 3 books series based on a “choose your own adventure” setup. It makes it very straightforward to little ones to understand that consequences depend on choices. Here is a link to the other books in the series.
The Cami and Wyatt books by Stacy C. Bauer, are also very entertaining and fun. These cute kangaroos deliver powerful messages about limiting screen time and sweets, practicing patience, and not owning too much stuff. She has written 3 other books in this series, as well, and I’ll link to them here.
Of course, I’ve shared about Becky Cummings’, The Magic of Me series several times. We love her books and the messages in each of them. Here’s a link to some of the other books we’ve loved!
Another great series of books written by Jory John and Pete Oswald, starts off with The Bad Seed. Included in my list, is The Good Egg, but really all their books are fun and teach good lessons.
Last, but not least, the Daniel Tiger and Franklin the Turtle books all teach such good value-based, real-life lessons, and we love pretty much every single one of those books.
Reading Books Together Teaches Adults and Children
Sitting down and reading stories about characters faced with decisions, allows our little ones to experience learning opportunities in a safe environment. As we take the time to have these important conversations, it will help our children learn and grow in big ways. Check out the full list of books here. I also put together a blog post about some of our favorite books for teaching kids about diversity, inclusion, and different cultures, so make sure to read those recommendations too! I hope you and your family will enjoy these books together!
