Our family loves holiday books, and there are so many awesome children’s Halloween books. It’s hard to even limit it to these few, but these are our favorites! Hopefully, you and your families can enjoy some of these books during the Halloween season this year.
Favorite Halloween Children Books
Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson. A total classic, we love the sweet message of friendship in this one. Here are some fun activities you can do along with it too.
Too Many Pumpkins by Linda White. As a pumpkin-lover, reading about all the pumpkin treats makes this one a dream come true for me. Every time I read it I’m all ready to start baking pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin pie, etc.
Ten Timid Ghosts by Jennifer O’Connell. This rhyming story is clever and cute! My kids love rooting for the ghosts to get their house back from the witch.
Spooky Wheels on the Bus by J. Elizabeth Mills. I got this from my mother-in-law when Dolly and Lacey were tiny. We love singing along and enjoying this Halloween version of The Wheels on the Bus.
Ghosts in the House by Kazuno Kohara. An extremely cute book! This little witch knows exactly how to catch ghosts and the best way they can be used around the house; once she’s worn out from a long day, the ghosts as sheets on the bed are perfect for her to snuggle under.
Gilbert the Ghost by Guido Van Genechten. The illustrations in this book are some of my very favorite. Such a cute story about a ghost who was different, and everyone loved him for it.
Gustavo, the Shy Ghost by Flavia Z. Drago. My sister introduced us to this one, and it’s such a sweet story about Gustavo making friends.
The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams. My absolute favorite Halloween book since I was a child. My mom always read this one to us and it’s just as fun to read as a mom. Since this is my favorite, I’ll include a few fun activities to do with kids. The first activity is word matching and re-telling cards. Another activity, is creating your own scarecrow with all the pieces from the story.
Creepy Pair of Underwear by Aaron Reynolds. This book just makes kids laugh. It’s cute and honestly, I love the illustrations, they’re so dramatic!
The Scariest Book Ever by Bob Shea. A cute little ghost who is scared of everything, but really fun colors and illustrations. He realizes he may be a little overdramatic.
Stumpkin by Lucy Ruth Cummins. An important story about loving yourself for your differences. Stumpkin learns what his purpose is even though it takes a while and some disappointment along the way.
The Good, The Bad, and The Spooky by Jory John. The seed cannot find the perfect costume, but eventually realizes he shouldn’t ruin everyone else’s plans.
Pick a Pumpkin by Patricia Toht. A special book all about the transformation and journey from pumpkin patch to Jack-o-lantern.
Favorite Baby Halloween Books
EEK! Halloween! by Sandra Boynton. This one makes us laugh, the chickens just don’t understand why all the other animals seem to be acting so strangely.
Five Black Cats by Patricia Hegarty. My mother-in-law made the cutest cats with black pom-poms on a black glove for this book, and it’s so fun for babies and my older kids still love wearing the glove while we read this fun one.
The Itsy Bitsy Pumpkin by Sonali Fry. Sung to the classic The Itsy Bity Spider. It’s always nice to mix up reading with songs, and this one is great for Halloween.
Five Little Pumpkins by Dan Yaccarino. Another one my mother-in-law gave to us, with the cutest matching pumpkin finger puppets. For an easy, no-sew version, here’s a tutorial.
Save this one for the next time you head to the library for children’s Halloween books. There are always new ones we’re adding to our list of favorites. What are some your family enjoys the most?
Sincerely,
