Growing up, my mom used to read us one Christmas book every night leading up to Christmas. When we’re all home for the holidays, we still request a few books from her. It is forever one of my favorite traditions and now we do the same thing. We’ve found some absolute favorites that I wanted to share here.
Favorite Christmas Books for Kids

Mary’s First Christmas by Walter Wangerin Jr. This has always been my very favorite book at Christmas time.
The Crippled Lamb by Max Lucado. Joshua is a sweet, injured since birth, lamb. He doesn’t understand why he has to live his life crippled, until one special night, when he learns why.
Mouse’s Christmas Gift by Mindy Baker. A cute mouse helps save the spirit of Christmas for a small village, through his small acts.
Come and See by Monica Mayper. A lyrical and special version of the Nativity and everyone coming to see the newborn king.
Silent Night by Juliet Groom & Tim Warnes. All the animals gather to the beautiful lyrics of this special Christmas song.
The Animals’ Christmas Eve by Gale Wiersum. A story told years later, with great pride, of the miracle that happened surrounded by animals.
The Legend of the Candy Cane by Lori Walburg. A young girl named, Lucy, befriends a new man in town, and learns the legend of the candy cane. Not only are her wishes fulfilled, so are the dreams of her town.
All the Colors of Christmas by Matthew Paul Turner. This book celebrates the Christmas season, and all the colors that infuse the holidays.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss. It’s such a classic and my kids love this story.
Christmas is Joy by Emily Dodd. A short simple, and beautifully illustrated, book about the true meaning of Christmas.
Pick a Pine Tree by Patricia Toht. A poem about finding a Christmas tree and all the preparations of decorating it.
Room for A Little One by Martin Waddell. Beautiful illustrations, and such a serene and special scene of that first Christmas night.
A Charlie Brown Christmas by Charles M. Schulz. I’ve loved this story and short movie my whole life. it’s so sweet to sit and enjoy with my kids.
The Nutcracker by The New York City Ballet. We love watching the ballet every year, as well. It is such a fun classic!
One Christmas Night by M. Christina Butler. The cutest little hedgehog busily prepares for Christmas with friends.
The Little Drummer Boy Ezra Jack Keats. A beautiful story of a boy who comes to Baby Jesus, broken, and heals in his performance for the Savior.
Cami & Wyatt Share the Christmas Spirit by Stacy C. Bauer. A story of two young kangaroos who spread joy and kindness to their new koala neighbors.
I hope you’ll enjoy some of these Christmas books with your little ones this holiday season. As always, share your favorites with me so we can keep adding to our list of books to check out.
