How to Thank Healthcare Workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic

April 11, 2020      Sarah Van Wagenen

Healthcare workers in hospital

First and foremost, I want to start by saying “thank you”. I know that many individuals and families are sacrificing in painful and difficult ways right now. My husband is a doctor and we’ve had a lot of really hard experiences in the last month. We live in an area that has not been entirely overwhelmed by COVID-19, but my husband has still had many patients test positive. There is a lot of physical, mental, and emotional weight placed on the shoulders of our healthcare workers right now. I wanted to take this chance to put together a post with ways that each of us can safely and effectively thank our healthcare workers.

Simple Ways to Thank Healthcare Workers

  1. The absolute most important way to say “thank you” is to STAY AT HOME. We frequently go out on walks, picnics, and to hike, but try to limit grocery shopping to once every two weeks. We also use the pickup option instead of going to the store, as much as possible. Walmart and Target both have free pickup options. With the increased usage of these programs, it’s hard to schedule a pickup time, especially for Walmart. If I can’t find a spot, they open at midnight, so I’ll stay up to place a pickup order.
  2. As much as possible, avoid purchasing and using medical grade personal protective equipment (PPE). For those who aren’t working with patients in a confined, hospital setting, making a mask for yourself when you are in public is a great alternative. Here’s a tutorial, by a friend of mine, teaching how to make no-sew mask from a t-shirt.
  3. Consider purchasing, coordinating, and safely delivering meals from local bakeries and restaurants to healthcare workers. Combine forces with family, neighbors, and friends to buy more meals. If you don’t have a friend or family member that works at a hospital, you can call different departments to organize this service.
  4. Make a sign to say “thank you” and post it in your window at home or in a photo on social media.
  5. Hang a red bow on your front door or mail box, as a thank you to front line healthcare workers.
  6. Do some research to see what brands are offering free products or services to healthcare heroes. Here’s a list of some of the brands I’ve found that are supporting front line healthcare heroes.

Brands Offering Products to Healthcare Workers

Masks for Heroes is connecting healthcare workers in need of PPE with necessary resources

Orgain Shakes for Heroes

Crocs is offering a free pair of shoes to healthcare workers; giveaways run every day at 12 PM

FIGS is supporting a GOFUNDME and has raised over $6.5 million for personal protective equipment for frontline workers

Costco is offering priority access to healthcare workers and first responders; need to show Costco membership card and employee ID to enter the warehouse without standing in line.

Training Mate is offering a month of free online workouts for doctors and nurses

Donate to Slice Out Hunger who is delivering pizza to healthcare workers

Tropical Smoothie Cafe tells medical professionals and first responders to contact their local Tropical Smoothie shop to have free smoothies delivered to their team.

Taudrey Jewelry is sending Thank You packages to nominated heroes; details on their Instagram post.

Sweet Green is sending fresh salads and bowls to nominated hospitals

RealGood Foods Co. is sending care packages to nominated frontline workers

FitCrunch is also sending care packages to nominated healthcare workers

Lovesac is offering 40% off for doctors, military, teachers, and first responders

Under Armour is offering 40% off for military, healthcare workers, teachers, and first responders

Kindred Bravely is sending free self-pumping nursing bras to nominated healthcare workers

Dr. Scholl’s is donating insoles to hospitals that submit a request

Every Monday, Krispy Kreme gives free donuts to healthcare workers. “Just go the drive-thru, tell us what you need, and show us your employer badge. Pick up some free dozens on the way to work for you and your colleagues, or maybe a free dozen on your way home to family after a long shift.”

I will try to keep this list of brands updated, and would love to add any other brands. Please tell me if there are any other brands supporting healthcare and essential workers throughout the COVID pandemic. I will make sure to add anything that is sent my way!

Most of all I hope that each of you and your families are staying healthy and safe during this difficult time. Make sure to check out my roundup post with loads of resources for entertaining kids at home during quarantine.

Sincerely,

Sarah

📍 Cathedral caverns Part 1: Just outside of Hu 📍 Cathedral caverns

Part 1: Just outside of Huntsville and 50 minutes away from Madison, Alabama is Cathedral Caverns. Boasting one of the largest commercial cave entrances in the world and a beautiful 60 degrees year round, this makes for one of the “coolest” family outings we can do in Alabama in the summer; both literally and figuratively!

The tour is a 90 minutes tour, every hour on the hour, but they sell out so buy them in advance, (we almost learned that the hard way when they let our friends in even though they were sold out).

A note on the gift shop. I normally don’t let my kids pick out stuff at gift shops, but the rocks and gems they could pick out for $1 or less were so cool. And there were beautiful necklaces made from shiny stone, I got for the girls for less than $3.

Follow along for “Cathedral Caverns Part 2” and more views of the caves incredible formations!

It’s easy to think we have to create unforgettab It’s easy to think we have to create unforgettable moments with expensive trips and packed schedules. I’m as guilty of that as the next person.

But some of childhood’s greatest memories are made in the backyard—with a fire, a few marshmallows, and time together.

90’s Summer Bucket List Stop 2 “America’s Pa 90’s Summer Bucket List Stop 2 “America’s Pastime”, there’s nothing like a local baseball game. Going to a Trash Pandas baseball game with the kids on a summer night is forever a favorite for us!

The atmosphere, the food, cheering the players on, ALL the freebies (the kids came home loaded down), time with friends, getting on the Jumbotron (multiple times), players signing stuff afterwards. The best way to spend a summer evening! Such a fun night we’ll always remember.

90’s Summer Bucket List Part 1 📍Hartselle Aq 90’s Summer Bucket List Part 1

📍Hartselle Aquatic Center, Alabama

We’re down to the last few weeks of summer so I’m starting a series to share some of our favorite bucket list items we checked off this year!

Everyone’s been talking about a 90’s summer and maybe we’ve just always done summer different, but less screens and more memories is what it’s all about!

First stop, The Hartselle Aquatic Center, just 20 minutes from Madison, Alabama, and my top pick for fun places to take the kids this summer. Here’s why.

- Affordable, $15 for 12 and older, $10 for 4-11, 3 and under free
- Small enough to keep an eye on everyone
- Big enough to keep everyone entertained for 4-6 hours (more if I let them)
- Easy to see where everyone is and what they’re doing, but the big kids also love the independence
- Multiple slides
- Lazy river
- High diving board
- Low diving board
- Shallow, zero entry and water features

Pro tip: I learned this from a fellow mom, get there as soon as it opens to get a good spot with umbrellas and a good view of the whole facility. We set up back by the bathrooms, which was great! The tables and umbrellas in the middle of the pools fills up fastest, so obviously a great spot if you’re there early enough to get it. #90ssummer #summerbucketlist #alabamawithkids #northalabama #madisonal

We had a blast doing this @cost_n_mayor inspired dance together, which has moves much more difficult than they make it look 🤣Our crew gets bigger every year and we already have one more babe since our summer get together. There are 16 grandkids and when we’re all together there are 29 of us! I’m so grateful for my people and the amazing families that Kurt and I have been blessed with.
