This is our first home with a fireplace, so I’m no expert, but I thought I could share some simple ideas for decorating a mantle. During my own experimentation, I have learned a few helpful things and decided to share some of my lessons learned.
3 Simple Ideas for Decorating a Mantle
1. Choose an accent mirror or large piece of art to display.
Finding something large and vertical will draw the eye up and keep the space above the mantle from looking empty. I really wanted to find a geometric and unique mirror, and finally found this one at Hobby Lobby. Below, I linked a few similar styles from Amazon (can’t beat FREE SHIPPING!).
2. Decorate your mantle seasonally.
By giving myself a specific theme, it also helps me create a cohesive look. Along with this, I try to keep a few staple pieces on the mantle year round, including a picture of Jesus, a few framed quotes, and our wedding picture.
I also have several color variations of this felt ball garland for different seasons/holidays. I love the simple pop of color and that you can get it for $2!! Even if not for your mantle there are so many places to use a garland like this. For example, in a nursery, kids’ room, play room, or as decor for a baby shower. I highly recommend getting one, or a few, of these garlands, they’re so cute!
*BONUS TIP: You can get seasonal decor WAY on sale after each season. My favorite places to look include Target and Hobby Lobby.
3. Choose decor with varying heights.
One of the most important tips of decorating a mantle suggests varying the heights of each piece that you choose to display. Our eyes like a little bit of variation and movement, so adding a few taller items mixed in with shorter items looks a lot more aesthetically pleasing to us than everything being the same height. Along with this tip, I wanted to point out, that scale is everything! So make sure before ordering a mirror, large piece of artwork, or smaller home decor item, that you check the measurements to make sure it will be a good fit for the space you’re planning to put it in.
In conclusion, the best rule-of-thumb, as expressed by the ultimate interior design guru, Joanna Gaines, is to “tell your story”. As you decorate your mantle, don’t just try to copy what someone else has done, use this space to tell your family’s story either with pictures, sentimental artwork or photos. By doing so, you’ll create a space that you love and feel proud to showcase.
I hope some of these tips are helpful, and that you find the combination of items to make your mantle perfectly you.
Sincerely,
