Grit bowl, anyone? For those who eat grits enough to have a preference, do you like them sweet or savory better? Honestly, I’ve mostly only made savory grits, but if you have a good sweet combo tell me what you add. I need to branch out. We love making savory grit bowls for a special breakfast, especially when we have friends or family visiting. We also make this for dinner sometimes, the whole family definitely approves.
Living in the South, we’ve loved trying different grit bowls when we’ve gone out to eat. One of our favorite grit bowls is the City Bowl at Another Broken Egg Cafe, so delicious. Their whole menu is pretty incredible, and they have restaurants all over, so if there’s one near you, I definitely recommend trying it out! After trying lots of different ways to dress up grits, we put together a combination that we really enjoy!
Check out the recipe for our favorite savory grit bowl combination.
Easy Grit Bowl
Ingredients
- 3/4 c quick cooking grits
- 3 1/2 c water
- 1 tsp salt
- 6 eggs scrambled
- 2 diced sausage links (we use the chicken apple sausage from Costco)
- 2-3 diced red or yellow potatoes
- grated Colby Jack cheese
Instructions
- Add the salt to the water and bring to a boil.
- Mix in the grits, then reduce the heat to a simmer.
- Continue cooking until the grits are thickened and the water absorbed, about 10 minutes.
- Scramble the eggs, and sauté the potatoes and sausage.
- Remove from heat and add eggs, sausage, potatoes, and cheese.
- For extra creaminess, you can also mix in butter and salt to taste.

There are so many ways to make grits, and we’re excited to keep experimenting with this dish. Here are some ideas of what to add in to make sweet grits.
