After reading the book, Why We Sleep, by Matthew Walker, Kurt and I have been determined to make sleeping more of a priority. I’ve shared on my Instagram all the changes we’ve been making and what has worked for us. I wanted to put together a blog post with some details of tips and products we’ve been using to help improve our sleep.
Simple Tips & Products to Get More Sleep
- Reduce artificial light exposure at night, and keep your room dark until you’re waking up. We use black out curtains, and you could also use a sleep mask. The Blissy Silk Eye Masks, are beautiful and provide so many benefits. When we’re traveling, this is my go-to for making sure I still have a dark room to sleep in.
- Use smart plugs to put low-light lamps on a timer for when to turn off every night, and when to turn on every morning. We use the Gosund smart plugs from Amazon and they’ve been amazing. We turn off our overhead lights and only have low-wattage lamps on for the last several hours of the night. We’ve scheduled our lamps to turn off at our bedtime every night and to turn on when we want to wake up in the morning. It’s be amazing to make this change!
- Limit screens and technology in the bedroom. This is an area that we need to work on more. We don’t have computers or a TV in our bedroom, but still plug our phones in and use them later at night than we should. If you read my post about the book Why We Sleep, it is strongly recommends not using your phone or other screens for several hours before you plan to go to bed.
- Get good pillows! This is one I couldn’t emphasize enough. I’ve shared several times about how important good pillows are to sleeping well. Kurt and I were gifted the most amazing pillows for our wedding and over time, both lost ours. We’ve now spent the last 3 years buying and testing so many pillows. We finally found the perfect one, the Coop Home Goods Memory Foam Fill pillow! I’m giving one away so make sure you enter the giveaway on my Instagram!
- Regulate when you go to sleep every night and when you wake up every morning (even on the weekends).

That’s a good way to look at it. As a necessary reward; I know being a night owl is so hard to cure. I just like being awake at night and get more done then.
