Get More Sleep with these Simple Tips & Products

February 20, 2021      Sarah Van Wagenen

sleep products and tips

After reading the book, Why We Sleep, by Matthew Walker, Kurt and I have been determined to make sleeping more of a priority. I’ve shared on my Instagram all the changes we’ve been making and what has worked for us. I wanted to put together a blog post with some details of tips and products we’ve been using to help improve our sleep.

Simple Tips & Products to Get More Sleep

  1. Reduce artificial light exposure at night, and keep your room dark until you’re waking up. We use black out curtains, and you could also use a sleep mask. The Blissy Silk Eye Masks, are beautiful and provide so many benefits. When we’re traveling, this is my go-to for making sure I still have a dark room to sleep in.
  2. Use smart plugs to put low-light lamps on a timer for when to turn off every night, and when to turn on every morning. We use the Gosund smart plugs from Amazon and they’ve been amazing. We turn off our overhead lights and only have low-wattage lamps on for the last several hours of the night. We’ve scheduled our lamps to turn off at our bedtime every night and to turn on when we want to wake up in the morning. It’s be amazing to make this change!
  3. Limit screens and technology in the bedroom. This is an area that we need to work on more. We don’t have computers or a TV in our bedroom, but still plug our phones in and use them later at night than we should. If you read my post about the book Why We Sleep, it is strongly recommends not using your phone or other screens for several hours before you plan to go to bed.
  4. Get good pillows! This is one I couldn’t emphasize enough. I’ve shared several times about how important good pillows are to sleeping well. Kurt and I were gifted the most amazing pillows for our wedding and over time, both lost ours. We’ve now spent the last 3 years buying and testing so many pillows. We finally found the perfect one, the Coop Home Goods Memory Foam Fill pillow! I’m giving one away so make sure you enter the giveaway on my Instagram!
  5. Regulate when you go to sleep every night and when you wake up every morning (even on the weekends).

Essentials for a Good Night’s Sleep Giveaway!

If you haven’t already entered my sleep giveaway on Instagram, make sure you do! I’ll be choosing a winner in just a few days to win the following products that will help with a good night’s sleep.

For those who have joined me in the challenge to go to sleep earlier, let’s keep it up! My main goal is to go to bed every night at 10:30 PM, and wake up at 6:30 AM. I haven’t mastered it, but have improved so much! Hopefully, you’ve been able to see some of the benefits of more sleep too, as we’ve been doing this challenge.

Sincerely,

Sarah

That’s a good way to look at it. As a necessary reward; I know being a night owl is so hard to cure. I just like being awake at night and get more done then.

If seeing Yellowstone’s wildlife is on your bucket If seeing Yellowstone’s wildlife is on your bucket list, don’t skip these two places!

📍 Hayden Valley + Lamar Valley, Yellowstone National Park

These are two of the best places in Yellowstone to spot wildlife and they’re completely different experiences!

🦬 Hayden Valley
Located in the heart of Yellowstone, Hayden Valley is famous for bison, elk, bears, coyotes, and sometimes wolves. The wide-open landscape makes it easier to scan the hillsides and riverbanks for animals. It’s also a beautiful drive with plenty of places to pull over and take in the views.

We drove through this area in the evening on our way out of Yellowstone and saw bison, a grizzly bear, deer, and elk. We even got to see a baby bison nursing. So special!!

🐺 Lamar Valley
Often called the “Serengeti of North America,” Lamar Valley is one of the best places in the park to look for wolves, bison, pronghorn, bears, and other wildlife. Get there early, bring binoculars, and watch the hillsides carefully—you never know what you might spot!

👀 Our biggest tips: Wildlife is wild, so sightings are never guaranteed. Look for groups of people stopped along the road (while following all park rules). Bring binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens, and animals are most active before 9 AM or after 4 PM.

📍Cathedral Caverns, AL Part 2: If you’re planning 📍Cathedral Caverns, AL
Part 2: If you’re planning a visit to Cathedral Caverns, these are the things you won’t want to miss:

✨ Goliath — one of the largest stalagmites you’ll ever see.
💧 A “frozen” waterfall… made entirely of stone.
🦄 A rock formation that really does look like a unicorn.
💚 Keep an eye out for “The Grinch.”
⛪ The Cathedral — an incredible open chamber filled with breathtaking formations.
💜 Natural amethyst crystals hidden throughout the cave.
🔒 The Gem Room — a hidden section that’s off-limits to visitors. It’s only accessible to scientists through a 40-foot wormhole crawl! You can see where the entrance is, learn about it in the museum, and trust me… our kids spent the entire walk back trying to figure out how they could become the ones to explore it someday.
🎬 Fun fact: Disney’s Tom and Huck (starring Jonathan Taylor Thomas) was filmed here!

This cave surprised us at every turn. Which feature would you be most excited to see?
