Favorite Card Games for Families: Cards Played Right

November 17, 2021      Sarah Van Wagenen

Who doesn’t love playing games? From strategy games, to games of luck, to fast paced competitive games, there is a game out there for everyone. Games are fun to play with family and friends. They’re the perfect way to meet and get to know new people too. Somehow games magically take away the awkwardness of interacting with people for the first time. We love games in our family and we are constantly finding new ones that we love to play so here is my list of favorite card games.

Favorite Card Games

family card games

Skull King– So fun to bet on how many tricks you think you will win as you try to figure out what other people have in their hand. This game just doesn’t get old because each round is so different from the one before.

Love Letters– Simple game that has different characters that have special abilities within a hierarchy and you win each round by having the highest card.

Five Crowns– We really like this one because it is very similar to Phase 10 but faster paced.

Cover Your Assets– This one gets intense fast but it’s so fun to try to build up your assets and cover the good ones up before someone can steal it.

Bonanza– A bean game where you trade and plant beans and try to plant the most beans, we love this one.

SkyJo– Another fun card game you can play with just two. We just got this one and even kids can play easily.

Set– We’ve had this card game for years, and it’s such a good one for two.

Nertz– This game is very fast paced as you build on each others piles and try to get rid of your cards first. The more people you play with, the better for this one.

Taco, Cat, Goat, Cheese, Pizza– We love this card game! It’s easy to learn and leads to lots of laughs.

Taboo– I have always loved this one, it’s perfect for a big gathering because you have to divide into 2 teams but you want there to be at least 4-5 people on each team. You try to get your team to guess as many words as possible by describing it without saying the descriptive words associated with it.

Bang– This is a fun game that takes you back to the Wild West where everyone is assigned a role (sheriff, deputy, renegade, or outlaw) secretively unless it is the Sheriff and you have to kill off your enemy in order to win but the renegade has to kill off everybody to win.

Jungle Speed– We love this because you can play with as many people as can fit around the table. It is very fast paced as you try to grab the totem first, in the middle of the table, as soon as you see someone else play a card with the same pattern as the last card you played.

Apples to Apples– This is a classic that is fun to play with people you know really well as well as people you don’t because you learn about people’s humor and likes depending on which card they choose.

Monopoly Deal– If you don’t have time to play the original Monopoly but you like it, this one is perfect for you! It is a pretty fast game and you still get to play with the properties used in Monopoly which is fun.

Speed– You can play this with any normal set of face cards and it is a 2 player game so it’s perfect to play with a spouse and it is very fast paced.

There are so many variations of games to play with your standard set of face cards that I did not share but there are a lot of fun ones out there. I only shared my favorite, Speed, because it can be played with just 2 people and is fast paced so you can play it anywhere. Games bring people together in a way nothing else can and that is why I love them. Tell me your favorite card games to play, I love learning new games and introducing them to my family!

Sincerely,

Sarah

Hiking through the incredible fall colors of Smugglers’ Notch on our way to Elephant’s Head Cliff felt like stepping straight into a fairytale. The golden leaves, vibrant mountains, and breathtaking views made it impossible not to stop and have my own little Colors of the Wind moment. 🍁

Start up the Sterling Pond Trail in Smugglers’ Notch (just outside Stowe), and almost immediately you’re rewarded with sweeping mountain views covered in brilliant fall color.

We ended up hiking about 5 miles here, including Sterling Pond and Elephant’s Head, but you definitely don’t have to do the full hike to experience some of the magic. This beautiful vista is just a short way up the Sterling Pond Trail and is absolutely worth the stop—even if you only have a few minutes!

Sometimes knowing what to order at a restaurant co Sometimes knowing what to order at a restaurant completely changes your experience.

Here are my top recommendations for food to try in Vegas.

📍Aria Patisserie

The Raspberry Rose macaron, a crisp, chewy shell, luscious raspberry filling, and a subtle floral rose finish. Sweet, tart, and perfectly elegant. 🌹🍓

📍Din Thai Fung

Order the Noodles with Spicy Sauce and use the “spicy sauce” to flavor as many other options as you choose. I highly recommend it with the Spicy Chicken Wontons and Pork Bao buns.

DO NOT leave without trying the Mango Shaved Ice and the Chocolate + Mochi XLB Bao Buns with a side of Sea Salt Cream

📍La Fontaine (for brunch)

Soufflé Pancakes: Ultra-fluffy, cloud-like pancakes topped with bright lemon curd, fresh berries, and airy thyme whipped cream.

Le Traditionnel Eggs Benedict, smoked ham, potato bread, and truffled hollandaise. Amazing, so well done!

📍 Saint Honore

Most famous for their creme Brulee donut and their beignets. We also tried the Passionfruit donut. All of them were standout donuts and not overly sweet, but so fresh and absolutely worth the stop.

📍Bellagio Patisserie

Coolest patisserie design, famous for the mesmerizing chocolate fountain, a multi-tiered cascade of silky, rich chocolate.

I recommend either a sweet or savory crepe + the Key Lime Tart.

📍Guy Fieri’s Las Vegas Kitchen & Bar

“Koreatown” Tacos are a fun Korean-Mexican fusion dish: marinated thin-cut ribeye, creamy avocado-lime mash, tangy kimchi, pico de gallo, spicy mayo, and corn tortillas. Best taco I’ve ever had!

📍Buddy V’s Ristorante

Grandma’s Meatballs — tender beef, veal, and pork meatballs simmered in rich marinara and finished with Parmesan. A perfect family recipe!

📍Salt & Straw

I was encouraged to try Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper 🍓🍦—one of Salt & Straw’s signature flavors. It’s creamy strawberry ice cream with balsamic and a touch of citrusy black pepper that makes the strawberry flavor really pop. Delicious!!!

Pro tip: take your ice cream outside and try to time it with watching a Bellagio fountain show.
